Colonial and Revolutionary American History for K-5 Teachers  

Dates:   

June 27 – July 8,    9 am – 3 pm (no class on July 4)
Follow-up:  PVMA lesson support and a Saturday Poster Session of new student work, Nov. 19, 2005
45 hrs; 67.5 pdps, or 3 graduate credits from Westfield State College

Location:    Westfield State College, with field trips to Deerfield (6/29, 6/30, 7/6) and Lexington & Concord (7/8) – Air conditioned classrooms  

Modeling a variety of teaching strategies, including:

“Learning to Look” at primary sources:

* pictures   * objects   * documents   * landscape   * architecture

Integrating math and literature with history instruction
 Student research using high quality web sites, including primary sources on the American Centuries website (www.americancenturies.mass.edu)

Museum educators from Memorial Hall Museum and the Deerfield Teacher’s Center
Prof. John Ifkovic, Westfield State College, author of Massachusetts Adventures

This institute is funded through a competitive grant program administered by the Massachusetts Department of Education.  It is offered at no cost to Massachusetts teachers. Limit: 30 spaces.  Please submit this application only if you can commit to attend all days of the institute. Participants must complete a project by Nov. 19, 2005 . The institute is offered for 67.5 p.d.p.’s, or 3 graduate credits from Westfield State College, at a cost of $240. (Payable to Westfield State College at the first session).  Graduate credit will involve an additional writing requirement.
